6,000 Reminders That Spring Has Sprung!

In 2010 I began building our garden at my home in Melrose, Massachusetts.  It’s a great old farmhouse, built sometime around 1829.  One of the things that attracted us to the property, (besides the double lot), was the perfect southwest orientation of the house–sunlight floods though the old glass windows all day long.  When I began thinking about our garden, I knew I wanted as little lawn as possible, and that it had to be pretty damn special if I was going to sacrifice valuable planting space for it.  With that in mind, I positioned my little patch of green directly in front of the house, where it tilts ever so slightly towards the sunlight.

I look at my garden as place where I can experiment with different design ideas, (at least to the point where I don’t completely drive my partner and my neighbors crazy), and I have to say that this spring has proven to be one of the most spectacular outcomes from an impromptu brainstorm yet.  Since March 1st, my 450sf lawn has been filled with over 6,000 vibrant crocus bulbs!  This is their third spring, and every year seems to get better and better.

I really can’t imagine a better way to celebrate spring…  Here’s to wishing you all the start of an awesome season of gardening!

Installing the crocus lawn is relatively easy.  The trick is that it must be done in the fall, just before the ground freezes.  Be sure to only cover the bulbs with about an inch or two of compost, and then compact the soil before rolling the sod over the top.  Once they are in, give them a good watering and prepare yourself for some incredible spring fireworks!
