FOLLY FIELDS
HAMILTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Boston’s North Shore is long known for its gracious old equestrian estates surrounded by verdant fields marked by dry-laid fieldstone farm walls. The area’s rural character is enhanced and protected by vast wetland systems nestled amidst rolling topography. Weaving throughout this timeless vernacular is an elaborate circuit of public horseback riding trails that link multiple communities with their natural surroundings.
Over time, post-agricultural succession had transformed once productive paddocks and grazing fields into invasive-filled, impenetrable parcels heavily populated with Norway maple, bittersweet, multiflora rose, and burning bush. When the rare chance to purchase one of these properties was presented, our polo-loving clients seized the opportunity to create their ultimate dream home.
A quarter-mile-long, tree-lined gravel lane passes by new grazing paddocks where friendly polo ponies greet guests. New fieldstone walls and reclaimed granite entry piers form an inviting entry threshold to an elegantly renovated and expanded farmhouse and gorgeous new timber-framed barn beyond. Artful grading transforms invasive-filled grazing paddocks into into an impressive private practice polo field surrounded by new native trees and vibrant pollinator meadows. Key mature canopy trees are preserved on site, invasives are removed and managed, and the edges of a healthy woodland ecosystem are revealed. Thermal granite terraces and walkways are thoughtfully crafted, and outdoor spaces are positioned to absorb beautiful views of the surrounding farm. Billowing shrub and perennial gardens brim with classic New England plantings, and native sods stabilize newly graded landforms. Horses gallop and trot throughout the property, and almost immediately, a memorable sense of place is born.
