LOUISBURG SQUARE GARDEN

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

An 1840’s federal style brick townhouse stands prominently in one of Beacon Hill’s most exclusive historic neighborhoods—Louisburg Square. At the heart of this garden, a custom copper-clad fireplace with blackened steel accents echoes the façade’s rich detailing. Virginia creeper flanks both sides of the structure and adds multi-seasonal dimension with colorful fall foliage and delicately winding winter character. A stone terrace crafted from locally sourced granite and repurposed cobblestones discovered on site during excavation allows for flexible movement within the space. Loose layers of plantain sedge and dwarf inkberry soften transitions between new and old masonry features, and copper Bevelo lanterns cast a soft glow upon surrounding garden walls. Newly planted climbing hydrangeas will eventually form billowy masses between the lanterns. Integrating historical charm with modern qualities, the end result is an aesthetically pleasing and highly functional indoor-outdoor space.
