VILLAGE STREET GARDEN
SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS
For new owners of a completely renovated townhouse in a densely populated urban neighborhood in Somerville, this narrow outdoor space lacked privacy and was devoid of character. They knew the landscape had potential, despite its small scale, and they enlisted our team to help transform the space into their own private oasis. Years later, the tightly crafted courtyard packs a punch with lots of beautiful and durable details that feel modern, yet rustic. A new entry boardwalk flanked with drought tolerant perennials and grasses creates an inviting sense of arrival, and previously exposed utilities are screened with crisp wood panels that add warmth and dimension to the home’s stark façade. An elegant entry gate and dense evergreen hedge combine to form a lush, living wall that encloses a small flush wood deck—the space feels private, and allows interior and exterior spaces to blend seamlessly. Large granite blocks form a long, linear bench where a custom fountain spills from the side to create just the right amount of white noise to soften bustling urban chatter. Amerlanchier, sweetfern, carex, hakone, and Solomon’s seal create lasting textural contrast throughout the summer. The garden completely transforms the property and makes for peaceful urban living in the heart of one of the densest neighborhoods in New England.
