A native of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Colin Poranski grew up exploring the woods, rivers, beaches, and salt marshes of his hometown. As a professional, Colin considers it a privilege to work within these same complex ecological and historical landscapes to create beautiful, functional, situated spaces.

While an undergraduate English major at the College of the Holy Cross, Colin’s honors thesis examined William Faulkner’s maps of his imaginary Yoknapatawpha County. After stints in academic publishing, teaching in France, and fine gardening, Colin received his Master in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon. His time on the West Coast imbued him with a fascination for the varied uses of water in the landscape, an admiration of Japanese and midcentury design principles, and a veneration for the work of Lawrence Halprin.

Prior to joining the team at MCLD, Colin worked in residential design on Cape Cod and in public green infrastructure and landscape restoration in the Boston area. He believes in a holistic approach to design, prioritizing native planting, ecological viability, and aesthetic continuity.

In his free time, Colin enjoys playing the piano, working on his planted aquarium, and spending as much time as possible on or near the water.  His master’s project, employing a research-through-designing approach to a vernacular Roman Catholic landscape typology, earned him an Honor Award from the Oregon chapter of the ASLA.
